Pina Bausch once said: "I'm not interested in how people move, but in what moves them." In 1985, Grace Jones played Mayday in the film A View to a Kill. She wasn't acting. She was. Benedetta wanted an object that could do the same. More than a belt: a belt fastens, adjusts, adapts. Mayday is a rigid aluminium ring. It slips on like a bangle, resting around the waist and hips the same way jewellery is worn: with a single, definitive gesture. Like Saturn's rings, orbiting without touching and without falling, a circle suspended around the body's centre of gravity. From that moment on, the gait changes. The rotation of the hips becomes visible. The aluminium catches the light of every movement. Its weight rests on the hips and is forgotten by the second step. Mayday does not fasten, does not adjust. It is inhabited.
